a fragrantly morose fierce panda one sheet

The Band: MASAKICHI

The Release: 'HUMMINGBIRD' / 'MACHINES'

The Formats: DOWNLOAD SINGLE & BEER MAT

The Release Date: JULY 24TH 2015

The Truth: Combining the expansiveness of post-rock and shoegaze with fuzzed-up indie rock structures and dance-orientated grooves, London's Masakichi have crafted a sublime soundscape of a debut mini-album in the form of 'Hummingbird', which is released on September 18th. Before then the title track, a prime example of powerfully sullen alt.rock, is released as part of fierce panda's rejuvented singles 'club' on download and beer mat (beer mat!!!) on July 24th, backed by an exclusive haunting rendition of Biffy Clyro's 'Machines' track. It really doesn't get cheerier than that.

As vocalist / guitarist Hannah explains, "The guitar at the beginning of 'Hummingbird' was the first inspiration for the lyrics. It sounds like the fast fluttering of wings - fragile and fleeting. It is about the frustration of not being able to hold on to what you need - the harder you try to cling on, the more it slips from your grasp..."

To celebrate the single release of 'Hummingbird' Masakichi play a special free show with label mates Longfellow, like this:

Masakichi instigator and guitarist Reuben Gotto has spent the past few years travelling the world with bands such as Foals, Maccabees and Alt-J, immersing himself in the sonics and inspirations of a nomadic musical lifestyle and returning home with a mammoth catalogue of tracks recorded in hotel rooms, dressing rooms and on long haul flights.

Finding kindred spirits vocalist Hannah Cartwright (Snow Ghosts) and bassist Hattie Williams (Telegraphs) in London, the trio began to transform Reuben's tracks into fully formed Masakichi songs. Enlisting Reuben's old band mate Ben Calvert (Killing Joke, Calvin Harris) on drums, the band laid down the six core songs that comprise 'Hummingbird' at the end of last year with Rich Wilkinson (Kaiser Chiefs, Adele) and Larry Hibbitt (Marmozets), and have been throwing themselves into the London live scene since, including a packed out Shacklewell Arms show in June.

The first song to be heard off 'Hummingbird' was called 'Spring', which sprang onto the blogosphere last month and caused www.chimeo.com to enthuse thusly:
"As introductions go, this is a pretty impressive one. 'Spring' is absolutely huge - all guns blazing, shoegazing prog-rock at its best. Hannah's voice haunts the verses until a huge burst of distorted lifts up the song into the higher reaches of an uplifting chorus which is beautifully harmonized."
