| a mesmerically enquiring fierce panda one sheet The Band: DESPERATE JOURNALIST The Release: ‘WHITE RABBIT’ The Format: DIGITAL SINGLE The Release Date: MARCH 25TH 2026 The Truth: Ever-dreamy indienoir protagonists DESPERATE JOURNALIST pop their heads above the alt.pop parapet with a seasonal release of ‘White Rabbit’, a fiercely ebullient Eastertime cover of the Jefferson Airplane cosmic classique from 1967. They know their musical history, do Desperate Journalist: their COVID-era version of Pulp’s ‘The Fear’ joined a scattered array of covers of nuggets by the likes of Stone Roses, REM and The Sound and, lest we forget, their moniker comes from a peeved Peel Session by The Cure in 1979. So as the quartet busy themselves with writing their sixth album - following in the fearsomely creative wake of 2024’s ‘No Hero’ - rest assured they are fully aware of ‘White Rabbit’s place in the pantheon of the ‘60s counterculture, soundtracking the flowery streets of San Fransisco as the world went dayglo while the corporate shadows lengthened. They’ll also know about singer / writer Grace Slick’s admirable attempts to unhitch the song from any lysergic jalopy, insisting that the references to ‘Alice’s Adeventure In Wonderland’ are “about following your curiosity”. Curiouser and curiouser, indeed. And if you aren’t quite as up to speed as Desp J themselves then consider that ‘White Rabbit’ lives on and on in ‘Fear And Loathing’, ‘Stranger Things’, ‘The Sopranos’, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, ‘American Dad!’ and ‘The Simpsons’ not once, but twice. The fierce panda label’s favourite Jefferson Airplane cover since The Lambrettas fell off their scooters for ‘Somebody To Love’ in 1982? Oh, go on then… |
