| A fuzzily vibrating fierce panda one sheet The Act: SOLAR EYES The Release ‘AN EAGLE FLIES ALONE’ (HIBS MIX) The Release Date: WEDNESDAY JANUARY 14TH 2026 The Format: DIGITAL SINGLE The Truth: You’ve heard them, you must have heard them, even tucked behind Gary Lineker’s dulcet tones - their sounds from the spaghetti western front have soundtracked ‘Match of the Day’ and a glorious gluttoon of other sporting shows. Now Birmingham’s cinematic psych-rock outfit Solar Eyes (for ‘tis they) kick off 2026 with a bold statement: the release of their brand-new single ‘An Eagle Flies Alone (Hibs Mix)’ on Wednesday 14th January, alongside the announcement of their forthcoming EP ‘Born Freaky!’, set for release on February 20th 2026. The Hibs Mix of ‘An Eagle Flies Alone’ takes the original track, previously heard on last year’s ‘Live Freaky! Die Freaky!’ album, to new heights – a soaring, atmospheric reimagining that blends shimmering guitars, hypnotic rhythms, and the band’s signature widescreen sound. It’s a taste of what’s to come from the ‘Born Freaky!’ EP, which promises to deliver bold, genre-jumping tracks that celebrate individuality and cosmic creativity. Or as Solar Eyes frontman Glenn Smyth puts it: “I love it when we do these EPs – we did one last year, ‘Crooked Orbit’, and we’ve done ‘Born Freaky!’ this time. It feels loose and experimental. Worryingly, some people prefer these EPs to our albums! But joking aside, I love this reworking and it gives me Death in Vegas and even Depeche Mode vibes. “‘An Eagle Flies Alone’ is probably my favourite off the album, with the strings and the fuzzy vibrato guitar. Then there’s the air of defiance: I’m an eagle, not a pigeon, and I can fly high and alone. I don’t need anyone as such. It’s that escaping-the-cult, ‘fuck ’em’ vibe. The Hibs remix is maybe even better, more immediate.” In the midst of this reworking action, the aforementioned ‘Live Freaky! Die Freaky!’ album gets a vinyl release to go alongside last year’s CD version. It’s out on February 6th on suitably raffish pink swirl vinyl, and you can get your copy from solareyesbandcamp.com right now. |
