SOFTER STILL ITALIA 90 MOON PANDA CHINA BEARS JEKYLL FRIDAY MARCH 20TH 2020 AUSTIN EDWIN’S (700 E 6th St, TX 78701, USA) Doors 7.00pm | Bands 8.00pm – 2.00am www.sxsw.com/festivals/music
SOFTER STILL: this swoony alt.pop trio is from Surrey, England and come to us via sister label Label Fandango. Their ‘Nuances’ album showed a band in thrall to the enthralling dreampop of the mid-‘80s and new single ‘Strength To Strength’ follows a similarly slinky trajectory.
ITALIA 90: a four-piece outfit from the fertile DIY districts of South London, Italia 90 has been rattling cages with the politicopunk of their third EP, ‘EP III’. The live show sees a skinhead frontman called Les Miserable barking anti-establishment slogans over a dynamic, driving sonic palaver but they’re sweethearts at heart.
MOON PANDA: the newest arrival to the fierce panda fold is Moon Panda, a Danish / American outfit who make “dreamy space pop for dreamy space people”. Their ‘Rick F***in Dalton’ single came out on March 6th and suitably beguiles with a blend of breathless vocals and sensuous twangings.
CHINA BEARS: epic indie dreamers China Bears continue their support of their sumptuous ‘I’ve Never Met Anyone Like You’ EP with their gently relentless gigging schedule. Expect hints of old school emo with loud / quiet / even quieter dynamics and a headful of melodic dreams.
JEKYLL: Blackpool alt.rockers JEKYLL released their new single ‘The Escapist’ on February 28th and the track appears on their second EP, ‘The Whispering Gallery’, which arrives on March 13th, just in time for their SXSW trip. The distant thunderous sound of Muse with a bendy shoegazing undercurrent? Perhaps… |
