**LAPSUS LINGUAE consist of Magaloof Taylor (vocals/bass/piano),
Penelope Collegefriend (vocals/piano/bass), Gunthor Hunter (guitar), Raga
Wu (drums) and Vex Irk (synth/guitar). They live in Glasgow and their
name translates as 'slip of the tongue'.
**Livid Meerkat stumbled across LAPSUS LINGUAE when they played
their debut London show earlier this year. The label hasn't yet recovered.
A seething blur of punk rock hairstyles, goth mascara, razorsharp cheekbones
and skinnyfit psuedo-metal Lapsus t-shirts, it took 20 minutes for us
to work out what the bloody hell LAPSUS LINGUAE were doing, and
then another five weeks before we could put it into words. And those words
included "The sound of Nick Cave being murdered. Really, really slowly..."
among many others.
**What we do remember is that the LAPSUS LINGUAE live show involves
violence, audience-baiting and staggering music which careers from classical
piano movements to lurching guitar rock, frequently within the same song.
This is what happens when you let classically-trained characters such
as Magaloof Taylor and Penelope Collegefriend loose upon planet rock.
**Fittingly, 'Parade! (And That's An Order)' reveals itself to
be a panoramic instrumental piece with strings, piano and a crunchy, incessant
murderous bassline. As you do. 'The Strang Remains The Same' is
another chaotically organised instrumental tune, while 'My Numb Left
Hand Le Parasite' squeezes Tom Waits around his gruff neck until he
turns a deeper shade of blue.
**Those of you with your ears closer to the ground than a particularly
low-slung hamster may be aware that two of these tracks - 'My Numb
Left Hand Le Parasite' and 'The Strang Makes Everything OK'
- appeared earlier in 2001 as a phenomenally limited seven inch single
on Jonson Family records. Being men of men, the Jonson Family will once
again make the 7" available to coincide with the release of the 'Parade!
(And That's An Order)' CD single.
**LAPSUS LINGUAE will be spending early October locked away in
the salubrious confines of Ca Va Studios in Glasgow recording a mini-album
for Livid Meerkat. The mini-LP will be called 'You Got Me Fraiche'
and will see the light of day before the close of 2001.
